EASTON, Pa. -- Longwood University women’s lacrosse was able to overcome a late Lafayette rally t beat the Leopards 14-12 Sunday afternoon in Easton, Pa. The Lancers (2-8) were led by Cathleen Strain’s/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) five goals while Lafayette’s Maria Drehwing scored three goals in the contest. Longwood will return to action on Tuesday April 10, when they travel to Virginia Tech for a 4 p.m. match-up.
The Lancers jumped on the scoreboard first after Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) fired a free position shot past the Leopard’s goalie for the 1-0 lead with 27:53 to go in the half. After the Leopards tied it at one, Longwood got goals from Strain, Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md (Mount de Sales Academy), and Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md (Mont de Sales Academy) to build a 4-1 lead with 18:43 to go in the half.
Emily Archibald brought the Leopards back within two, just sixteen seconds later, but the Lancers went on another run. This time four goals, led by Strain’s two to pad their lead to 8-2 with 2:38 to go before the break. Archibald scored her third goal of the half with 1:22 to put the game at 8-3 going into halftime.
After the Lancers and Leopards exchanged a pair of goals, Lafayette went on a three goal run of their own that was answered by Longwood goals from Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (The John Carroll School) and Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) to keep Longwood ahead 13-8 with 16:47 to go in the game. After Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario (Lorne Park Secondary School) took a pass from Cathleen Strain and put it in the back of the net for the 14-9 score with 12:27 to go in the game, Lafayette began to chip away at the Lancer lead a short time later. The Leopards would score three goals in the final ten minutes but were unable to get any close as the Longwood defense preserved the win.
Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) and Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) combined for the win as Holliday saw 52:14 minutes of action and allowed eight goals while stopping nine and Coughter made one stop and allowed four goals in 7:46 time in the net.
