Softball Sweeps Hampton 7-3, 3-2

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University softball snapped a seven game skid with a doubleheader sweep of Hampton beating the Pirates 7-3 and 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Farmville.  Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) led the Lancers (12-12) going 3-5 (.600) with four runs scored and two RBI, including a homerun in her first at bat in game two.  Longwood will return to action on Wednesday, April 4, when they take on Virginia Tech in a  p.m. doubleheader match-up at Lancer Field.
    
In game one, the Pirates’ Jennifer Gonzales hit a lead-off homerun over the left field fence for the early 1-0 lead.  Hampton padded their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third after Jada Jeffries hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Tesara Liggins at third.  
    
Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) battled back in the fourth inning fanning all three Hampton batters in order to keep the Lancers in striking distance.  
    
Started by Cailtin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) Longwood’s bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing in four runs to take a 4-2 lead.  Hooe hit a lead-off double to left field to get the Lancers going.  After a Hampton got Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) to ground out, the visiting Pirates then international walked Washington to put runners on first and second with one out.  Hooe and Washington each moved up a base on a past ball to put both players in scoring position.  Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) made her way to first base on an international walk to load the bases with one out.  Hampton was able to get the force out at home on Longwood’s next batter, but Kaitlin McKeown/Gordonsville (Orange County) hit a single to bring in Washington and Radford to tie the game at two.  Longwood was able to cash in on a Pirate fielding error as McKeown and Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) came in for the 4-2 lead.  
    
Longwood took the momentum from the fourth inning to the fifth inning, scoring three runs to jump out to a 7-2 lead.  Hooe got on base, on a fielding error by the right fielder placing her at third with no outs.  The Lancers’ next batter, Ketsdever, brought Hooe in on a single to right field and moved to second on the throw to home.  The Longwood bats continued to make contact, as Washington brought in Ketsdever on a double to right center for the 6-2 lead.  Washington came in two batters later as Betterton singled down the left field line to pad Longwood’s lead to 7-2.  
    
Forsyth continued to pitch strong in the late going and sealed the win going 7.0 innings of work sacrificing three runs on five hits while striking out eight in the win.
    
In game two, Washington opened up the scoring for the Lancers hitting a two out homerun to center field for the 1-0 lead.  Hampton however, came right back in the top of the second and took a 2-1 lead on a fielding error by Longwood.
    
The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when Betterton brought Washington in from third on an error by the Pirates, knotting the score at two.  The Lancers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Ketsdever singled to right field with the bases loaded to give Longwood the 3-2 game two win.
    
Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) went the distance for Longwood in game two allowing two runs on five hits while fanning seven in seven innings of work.
