BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 6-3 baseball decision past visiting Marist College Friday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (13-6) won their fourth consecutive game, and sixth in the last seven, while led by senior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-4, 2 RBI) and sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (3-4, 2 RBI) -- each with three hits and two RBI on the afternoon. Longwood and Marist (1-6) will play again on Saturday, March 10, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. in Farmville.

Longwood spotted Marist two unearned runs in the second inning before scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings, and two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to lead 6-2. The Red Foxes added a final run in the eighth inning to provide for the final three-run margin of victory for the Lancers. In the second, Max Most (2-3) reached on a bunt single with one out and moved to third on an error at second base that allowed Adam Pernasilici (2-4, RBI) to reach base as well. Most crossed the plate on a balk call before Pernasilici scored on an RBI single by Ryan Gauck (1-3, RBI).

In the third, sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3) singled to lead-off, stole second base, and later scored on a one-out single through the right-side by freshman Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (2-3, RBI). In the fourth, Quigley led-off with a double down the left-field line and crossed the plate on a one-out single to left field by Childress. In the fifth, Ellis reached on a one-out single and later scored unearned with two outs on a throwing error that allowed freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (0-3) to reach base. Berry stole second base and came home unearned on an RBI double down the left-field line again by Quigley.

In the seventh, Quigley’s one-out single to right field plated senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-4) who had led-off with yet another double down the left-field line. Childress followed with a two-out single to right field to score Quigley. Marist added its final run in the eighth when Pernasilici singled with one-out to drive home Kenny Anderson (1-4) who had reached on a fielder’s choice play.

Longwood senior right-handed pitcher Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (2-1), on the preseason Wallace Watch List, earned the pitching win with a complete-game effort on the mound, scattering 10 hits and three runs, only one earned, with four strikeouts and two walks over the 9.0 innings. McCullough now sports an impressive 1.80 ERA through 35.0 innings this spring with 30 strikeouts (7.71). Eric Supplee (0-1) took the loss for the Red Foxes, allowing eight hits and four runs, two earned, with three strikeouts and no walks over the first 5.0-plus innings.

It was the first-ever meeting between Longwood and Marist in baseball, the first game of a three-game weekend series.
