FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Coppin State University Wednesday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; winning the first game 16-2 and the second game 13-1. The Lancers improved to 12-6 this season with three-straight wins, and will play again this weekend, March 9-11, hosting Marist College for three games in Farmville at Lancer Stadium -- game one of the three-game series is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m..
Against Coppin State in the opener, Longwood scored 16 runs on 10 hits in a contest ruled official after five innings due to the agreed-upon 10-run rule. The Lancers did spot the Eagles (0-10) two runs in the first inning as the visitors got a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line to lead 2-0. LU scored a run in the first when senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-2, RBI) walked to lead-off and later scored on a wild pitch. The hosts broke it open in the second inning with nine runs on five hits and one error, getting key hits from freshmen Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-2, 2 RBI) and Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-3, 3 RBI) -- a two-run single by Ellis and a two-run double by Kimble.
Longwood added three runs on two hits in the third inning, and three more runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-2, 3 RBI) had a two-run triple in the third, and Ames added an RBI double in the fourth for the Lancers. Freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-2, 2 RBI) also had two RBI in the contest, as did redshirt freshman A.J. Karidis/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-2, 2 RBI). Senior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (2-0) earned the pitching win with a complete-game effort, allowing just three hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and one walk over the 5.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored 13 runs on 12 hits in a contest official after six innings due to the 10-run rule. The Lancers again spotted the Eagles an early lead (1-0) as the visitors scored an unearned run in the first inning. LU responded with four runs in the first on three hits, the biggest off the bat of senior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-2, 3 RBI) who had a three-run double. The hosts added two runs on three hits in the second inning, including a two-run double by Kimble (3-3, 3 RBI).
Longwood secured the home triumph with seven runs on three hits, aided by two errors, in the third inning. Sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-2, 2 RBI) had a two-run double, and freshman Chris Despins/Oak Hill (Oakton) (1-4, 2 RBI) added a two-run single. Sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-3, RBI) also had two hits in the second game for the Lancers.
Freshman Jake Yocum/Thurmont, Md. (Catoctin) (1-0) gained his first collegiate pitching win with the first 4.0 innings, yielding just two hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) worked the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and no walks as well.
