Baseball Defeats Valparaiso 7-1; Lancers Win Weekend Series 2-1

Senior Captain Tyler Ames (2-2) Collects Two Hits, Three RBI Against Crusaders

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 7-1 baseball decision past visiting Valparaiso University Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; winning two of three games against the Crusaders during the weekend series. The Lancers (10-6) were led by senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-2, 3 RBI) with two hits and three RBI on the afternoon as Valparaiso (1-2) was forced to use seven pitchers while allowing 10 hits and seven walks. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, March 7, hosting Coppin State University at Lancer Stadium for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Farmville.

In the series finale, Longwood scored one run in the third inning, two runs in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth inning, and one more run in the eighth inning. In the third, freshman Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (2-4) singled to lead-off and later crossed the plate when sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-4, RBI) reached on a fielder’s choice. The Lancers added two runs in the fifth when Kimble again singled to lead-off and scored this time on a sacrifice fly to right field by Ames. Bailey also singled and crossed the plate on a balk. In the sixth, Ames hit a clutch one-out, two-run single to right-center field scoring freshman Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (0-3) and sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (0-0) -- each reaching base on walks. Freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-4, RBI) plated the other run when he reached on another fielder’s choice, scoring classmate Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-3) who had singled earlier in the inning.

Longwood added a final run in the eighth when sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3, RBI) hit a one-out sacrifice fly to right field following three consecutive walks to score Ames. Valparaiso avoided the shutout with an unearned run in the ninth inning, aided by an error and two walks.

Longwood junior right-handed pitcher John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (3-2) earned the pitching win with the first 5.1 shutout innings on the mound, yielding just four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Senior Needham Jones III/ Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (LHP) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits with one strikeout and one walk. Jones has not allowed a hit or a run in his last three relief appearances for the Lancers, striking-out seven over 7.2 innings with the one walk.
