FARMVILLE, Va. -- Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) fired a free position shot past La Salle’s goalie with 0:19 left in the game to give the Longwood women’s lacrosse team a 9-8 win Sunday afternoon at the Athletic Complex in Farmville. The match-up between the Lancers (1-7) and Explorers (4-3) was a back and forth battle, that saw six ties and five lead changes. Longwood will return to action on Friday, March 30, when they travel to Villanova for a 5:30 p.m. match-up with the Wildcats.
Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) put the Lancers on the board early scoring an unassisted goal at the 27:30 mark for the 1-0 lead. La Salle notched three consecutive goals a short time later to grab a 3-1 lead with 22:40 to go in the half. Strain led the Lancers to a three goal run of their own, as the senior assisted on Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario (Lorne Park Secondary) goal to start the run and teamed up with Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) on the following two goals to grab a 4-3 lead with 16:23 to go before the break. The Explorers closed out the scoring, recording a goal at 13:52 and 9:00 to head into halftime with the 5-4 lead.
Strain picked up where she left off in the early going of the second half, netting her third goal of the game just 4:08 into the second frame. La Salle built their lead back up to two goals after Jillian Davis and Emily Bonczek each snuck a shot in the Lancers’ net.
Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) and Farquharson knotted the game at seven on back-to-back goals with 12:07 to go in the game. After Bonczek put La Salle back up by one, the Lancer defense buckled down and kept the visiting squad off the scoreboard for the final 12:07. Barry fired a low hard shot past the Explorers’ Brittany Friedrich to tie the score at eight with 7:43 left in the game. Longwood pressured the La Salle defense looking for the go ahead goal in the final minutes of the game. Strain took the ball just outside the circle and drove down bringing three defenders with her on the free position shot. Strain made a quick move to her right and fired a shot over the shoulder of Friedrich to get the go ahead goal and give the Lancers their first win of the season.
Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) anchored the defense and had another strong performance in net, making nine saves in sixty minutes of action while Friedrich recorded eight saves of her own in the loss.
