TEMPE, Ariz.—Longwood University softball was unable to contain the offense of Arizona State, falling 12-1 to the Sun Devils in the Diamond Devil Classic Saturday evening. The Lancers (10-9) were unable to recover from a five run first inning by the Sun Devils (33-7) in the loss. Longwood will return to action on Sunday, March 25, taking on the Fighting Illini of Illinois at 1 p.m..
ASU hit back-to-back-to-back singles to bring in its first two runs of the game. The Sun Devils continued to roll offensively bringing in three more runners in to jump out to the 5-1 lead after one half inning of play.
Longwood got back on run in the bottom half of the inning, on a double from Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) to score Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) who was standing at first after drawing a two out walk.
After Arizona tacked on a run in the top of the fourth inning, the Sun Devils exploded on offenses scoring six runs on three hits to grab the 12-1 win.
Catelyn Slagle/Chesapeake (Greenbrier Christian Academy) recorded the loss for Longwood, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits while striking out six. Megan Elliot was strong all game for the Sun Devils pitching all six innings and allowing one run on six hits while fanning seven batters.
