FARMVILLE, Va.-- The Longwood women’s tennis team recorded its first ever win over James Madison Saturday afternoon, defeating the Dukes 5-2 in Farmville. The Lancers (5-6) swept doubles and took four of six singles matches in the win. Longwood will return to action on next weekend as they take part in the Hampton Roads Collegiate in Virginia Beach. The tournament begins on Friday, March 30, and will wrap up on Sunday, April 1.
Romana Bucur/Brasov, Romania (Joan Mesota) and Elena Triebskorn/Heddesheim, Germany (Carl-Benz-Gymnasium) got the Lancers going in the number one and two spot of singles, as Bucur defeated the Dukes Mary Napier in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 while Triebskorn handed Anna Khoor 6-3 and 6-2 losses. Laura Simon/Manresa, Spain (IES Lluis de Peguera) followed that up with a two set win over Rebecca Erickson defeating the Duke 6-0 and 6-1. Ashley Melson/Virginia Beach (Kellam) fell to Briana Jain 4-6, 1-6, while Lexi Torrice/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) gave the edge back to the Lancers in the number five spot, defeating the Dukes’ Lauren Graham 6-2 and 6-3. Brittany Huddleston/Roanoke (Cave Spring) rounded out the singles action falling to Kelly Maxwell 6-1 and 6-1.
Longwood was strong in doubles action as Triebskorn and Davis defeated JMU’s Napier and Khoor 8-2 in the number one spot. Bucur and Torrice beat Erickson and Jain 8-4 while Simon and Melson won their match 8-2 over Graham and Maxwell.
