BOX SCORE

Tempe, Ariz.-- Longwood softball fell 9-1 to BYU in the second day of the Diamond Devil Classic Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) recorded the lone run in the top of the first inning, hitting a homerun over the right field fence for the early lead.  Longwood (10-8) will wrap-up day two of the tournament with a 10 p.m. match-up with host #5 Arizona State.

After Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) grounded out to second base, Ketsdever came to the plate and hit the one out homerun for the early 1-0 lead.  Two batters later, Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) drew a two out walk and made it to second on a wild pitch putting a runner in scoring position with two outs.  BYU however got the next Longwood batter to strikeout ending the threat.

The Cougars came charging back in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.  BYU loaded the bases with one out on a single and back-to-back walks.  The Cougars hit a pair of singles to bring in the two runs for the one run lead after the first inning.

Kaitlyn McKeown/Gordonsville (Orange County) and Longwood threatened again in its following at back as McKeown hit a lead-off single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kori Bonner/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley).  McKeown made her way to third on a fielder’s choice but was stranded there keeping the game at 2-1.

The Cougars offense exploded in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring six runs on four hits for the 8-1 lead that Longwood could not recover from.  The Lancers were unable to bring another run across the plate and BYU tacked on a run in the bottom of the third for the 9-1 win.

Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) recorded the loss pitching three innings and surrendering nine runs, seven earned on eight hits and five walks.  Catelyn Slagle/Chesapeake (Greenbrier Christian Academy) came in relief in the fourth and recorded one strikeout and retired BYU in order in the bottom of the inning.
