BOX SCORE

TEMPE, Ariz.—Longwood softball was unable to get going offensively against #5 Arizona State falling 10-0 in its second game of the Diamond Devil Classic Friday night.  The Lancers’ (10-7) lone hit of the game came off the bat of Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The Sun Devils improves to 31-7 on the year.  Longwood will return to action on Saturday, March 24, when they take on BYU at 5 p.m..

Arizona State took no time to jump on the scoreboard getting two runs in the top of the first after Kaitlin Cochran hit a two run homerun over the right field fence, to bring in Jackie Vasquez at second base.

After Kori Bonner/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley) drew a lead off walk giving Longwood its first base runner in the third inning, Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bonner to second base.  The Lancers got their second base runner of the inning a short time later, as Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) drew a two out walk to put runners at first and second.  That’s as close as Longwood would get as Arizona State’s Megan Elliot got the following Longwood batter to ground out to end the inning.

Arizona State continued to role offensively tacking on two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and five in the sixth, while the Sun Devil defense held the Lancers offense to only one hit and no runs in the match-up.

Forsyth recorded the loss in the circle allowing ten runs, nine earned, on twelve hits while fanning three batters in six innings of work.  Elliot was strong in the circle for the Sun Devils, allowing only one hit and striking out six in six innings of action.
