HAMPTON, Va.-- The Longwood women’s tennis team fell 5-2 at Hampton on Wednesday afternoon in Hampton, Va.. The Lancers (4-6) took two of six singles matches and were swept in double action. Longwood will return to action on Saturday, March 24, when they host in-state rival James Madison in a 11:00 a.m. match.
Romana Bucur/Brasov, Romania (Joan Mesota) took 7-5 and 6-0 sets from Hampton’s Elena Besedova in the number one spot while Elena Triebskorn/Heddesheim, Germany (Carl-Benz-Gymnasium) fell to Katerina Jiskrova 4-6 and 1-6 in the number two spot. Laura Simon/Manresa, Spain (IES Lluis de Peguera), Ashley Melson/Virginia Beach (Kellam) and Lexi Torrice/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) all recorded losses in their respective matches. Torrice battled back from a 2-6 game one loss, winning game two 7-5 before falling 8-10 in the super tie breaker. Brittany Huddleston/Roanoke (Cave Spring) recorded the Lancers only other win in singles, beating Kelli Young who was forced to retire with the score 4-3.
Longwood struggled in doubles as all three teams Triebskorn/Davis, Bucur/Torrice and Simon/Melson all fell to the Pirates.
