BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 5-0 baseball decision at Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Wednesday in Blacksburg, ending a nine-game winning streak by the Lancers who are now 18-7. Longwood will play again this weekend, hosting Princeton University for its first-ever Night Baseball Game at Lancer Stadium in Farmville on Friday night, March 23, beginning at 7 p.m.. The Lancers and Tigers will also play another night game on Saturday (3/24) at 7 p.m.. Admission is FREE to all Longwood baseball games at Lancer Stadium.
At Virginia Tech, the Hokies took leads of 1-0 in the third inning, 3-0 in the fifth inning, 4-0 in the sixth inning, and 5-0 in the eighth inning en route to the home win. Evan Frederickson and Scott Stoehr combined to limit the Lancers to only two hits on the day as well, though three Longwood pitchers allowed just seven hits to the hosts. Tech was led by Bryan Thomas (3-5, RBI) who collected three hits, including an RBI single in the third inning to get things started. Steve Bumbry (2-3) added two hits, both doubles, for the Hokies.
Sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-4) and freshman David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-2) had the two hits for Longwood, both singles. Senior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (0-1) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, scattering three hits and three runs, two earned, with one strikeout and five walks.
Frederickson earned the mound win for Virginia Tech with the first 7.0 scoreless innings, yielding the two hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Stoehr got the save with the final 2.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
Longwood is now 0-7 against Virginia Tech all-time in baseball since first playing in 1981.
