In game one Howard threatened in the second inning after Brianne Gutierrez hit a lead-off double and made her way to third on a fielder’s choice putting a runner in scoring position with one out. Longwood buckled down on defense and retired the next two batters, ending the threat.
The Lancers jumped on the board in the top of the third inning, cashing in on an error by the first baseman for the 1-0 lead. Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) hit a one out single to left field and came in on an over thrown ball to first after Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) managed to catch the ball with the end of her bat to the right side of the infield. The Bison’s Jennifer Bien-Aime tracked down the ball, but threw it away sending Betterton home and Garrison to second. The Lancers however couldn’t bring Garrison around as Howard retired the next two Longwood batters.
Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) put the Lancers up by two, hitting the first pitch she saw in the fourth inning over the left field fence for her first homerun of the year and giving the home squad a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bison came storming back in the fifth inning, rallying on two outs to knot the score at 2-2 with five innings in the book. Longwood came right back in the bottom half of the inning, after Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) hit a lead-off double to left and moved to third two batters later on a sacrifice bunt by Garrison. Radford came in on a fielder’s choice from Hooe to give the Lancers a 3-2 lead. After Howard scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score at three, Kaitlyn McKeown/Gordonsville (Orange County) hit a shot over the left field fence to give the Lancers the lead for good. Catelyn Slagle/Chesapeake (Greenbrier Christian Academy) recorded the first two outs in the seventh inning, finishing the game allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits and four strikeouts in 6.20 innings of work. Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) preserved the win, getting the Bison’s Fallon Jones to fly out to right field for her first save of the year and Longwood’s 4-3 game one win.
In game two, it took no time for the Lancers’ bats to come alive, as Longwood tallied nine runs in the bottom of the first inning on six hits to jump out to a commanding nine run lead. Hooe was able to reach first base on an error by Howard’s second baseman and hustled home on a single by Ketsdever for the 1-0 lead. Ketsdever who made it to second on the throw in the previous play, came around on a double to centerfield by the Lancers’ next batter, Washington, who was brought in on the Lancers’ next hit which came off the bat of McKeown for Longwood’s second consecutive double in the inning.
The Lancers bats continued to roll in the second inning started on a double to left field by McKeown who was brought in two batters later on a single from Forsyth. McKeown finished the game going going 4-4 with three doubles and four runs scored. In the top of the third inning Betterton recorded her first homerun of her collegiate career, sending the ball over the left field fence to give Longwood a 15-0. Forsyth recorded the shutout victory allowing only two hits in the 20-0 win.
