EUGENE, Ore. -- The Longwood women’s lacrosse team fell 11-8 at Oregon on Thursday evening, falling to 0-5 on the season while Oregon improves to 6-3 on the year. Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) went the full sixty minutes in goal for the Lancers, making 16 saves in the contest. Longwood will wrap up its trip to Oregon on Saturday, March 17, when they take on Vermont in a 2 p.m. match-up.
After Brooke Dieringer put the Ducks up 1-0, Longwood came right back down the field and knotted the game at one 0:35 later, as Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) took a pass from Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) and fired into the back of the net for the 1-1 score. Oregon went on a four goal run early in the first half, that gave the home squad a 5-1 advantage with 18:47 to go before the break. Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) ended the Ducks’ run and the Lancers’ goal drought 2:30 later, scoring the first of her two goals to bring Longwood within three.
With the Ducks ahead 7-2 with less than ten minutes to go in the first half, Longwood went on a three goal run of their own to cut Oregon’s lead to 7-5 late in the half. Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (The John Carroll School) started the run after she took a pass from Barry and fired it into the Ducks’ net at the 8:29 mark. Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) brought the game within three with an unassisted goal of her own two minutes later followed by Cathleen Strain’s/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) free position goal to cap the run. Oregon was able to tack on a goal 1:09 before halftime to give Oregon some breathing room heading into the break.
The Ducks went up 9-5 with 21:25 to go in the game after Alison Leiner recorded her second goal of the night. The Lancers rallied back and held Oregon scoreless for the next 13:00, while scoring three goals of their own to cut the deficit to 9-8. Owen scored her second unassisted goal at the 19:40 mark followed by a pair of free position goals by Barnaba and Strain at the 19:01 and 8:39 marks. That’s as close as Longwood would get as Oregon put two more goals on the board to grab the 11-8 win.
Holliday anchored the defense for Longwood while Sam Debow recorded seven saves and eight goals against in sixty minutes of work for Oregon.
