LAS VEGAS, Nev.— Longwood University softball used a four run fifth inning to grab a 4-2 win over UNLV at the Eller Media Stadium Classic Saturday evening. With bases loaded the Lancers had back-to-back singles from Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) and Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) to give the Lancers (9-5) the lead for good. Longwood will wrap up action in the tournament Sunday, March 11, when they take on Harvard at 2:15 p.m..
After four scoreless innings of play, the Rebels jumped on the board 2-0 after Kendall Fern homered to left field, bringing in Alyssia De La Torre who came in to pinch run for Laura Briones after a lead-off single.
The Lancers battled back in the game in the bottom of the inning, and was able to bring in four runs on five hits, to build a 4-2 lead after five full innings of play. Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) drew a lead-off walk and was moved to second on a single by Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) that made its way through the left side of the infield putting runners at first and second with no outs. Radford and Betterton each moved up a base after Kori Bonner/Round Hill (Loundon Valley) laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Radford and Betterton in scoring position with one out. Nicole Hamill/Greenville, N.C. (Farmville Central) hit an infield single to the shortstop to score Radford and cut the UNLV lead to 2-1. After Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) loaded the bases on a single to the third baseman, the Lancers next two batters, Hooe and Ketsdever hit back-to-back RBI singles, bringing in Betterton and Hamill and giving Longwood a 3-2 lead. With the bases still loaded Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) was able to draw a walk, bringing in the Lancers’ fourth run of the inning and the 4-2 lead. UNLV ended the threat and got the next two Longwood batters to strike out keeping the game at two runs.
The lead was all Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) needed as the freshman pitcher retired the next six Rebel batters in order for the 4-2 win. In seven innings of work, Forsyth gave up two runs on four hits and only walked one batter. Both Hamill and Hooe were 2-3 with an RBI in the Lancers’ win.
