BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 5-1 baseball decision past visiting Marist College Sunday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; completing a three-game weekend sweep. The Lancers improved to 15-6 with their sixth-straight win, and eighth in the last nine, while once-again led by senior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-3, 4 RBI) for the third-straight day with three hits and four RBI -- including two home runs. Longwood will be idle until next weekend, March 17-18, when Fairleigh Dickinson University visits for another three-game series at Lancer Stadium in Farmville.

In the series finale, Longwood took an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning and had leads of 2-1 in the third inning, 3-1 in the fourth inning, 4-1 in the sixth inning, and 5-1 in the eighth inning. In the first, sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-2) opened with a double to the base of the center field wall and scored with one-out on a sacrifice fly to right field by Childress. Marist (1-8) scored its only run of the contest in the third inning when Kyle Meyer (1-4) singled to lead-off and later crossed the plate unearned with two outs courtesy of a throwing error by the Lancers.

In the third, Bailey drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second base before scoring unearned as well as a ground ball to second base by senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3) found its way into right-center field on the fielding error. In the fourth, Childress led-off with a solo home run to left field -- near the same spot he had homered to on Saturday to the left of the 375-foot sign. In the sixth, Childress again went yard on a solo blast down the left-field line for his second round-tripper of the game and third in two days against the Red Foxes. He produced yet again in the eighth inning with a two-out double to right field that scored sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-4) who had reached base on a two-out single up the middle. Childress was a one-man wrecking crew as he finished the three-game series 8-11 (.727) at the plate with three home runs, one double, 11 RBI, a sacrifice fly, and three runs scored as well.

Longwood junior starter and right-handed pitcher John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (4-2) earned the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings on the mound, scattering five hits and one run, unearned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior left-handed pitcher Needham Jones III/Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (2) pitched the final 2.0 shutout innings, yielding no hits and no runs with one strikeout and one walk for his second save of the season.

Josh Rickards (1-2) took the loss for Marist, yielding four hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and three walks over the first 5.0 innings.

Longwood outscored Marist 18-5 during the three games, while also out-hitting the Red Foxes 31-17 over the weekend. The Lancers will open their series against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, March 17, with a doubleheader at 12 p.m..
