BOX SCORE

LAS VEGAS, Nev.-- The Longwood University softball team recorded a 3-1 loss to Oregon in its second day of the Eller Media Classic on Saturday afternoon.  Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) recorded the Lancers’ (8-5) lone run on a passed ball in the sixth inning.  Longwood will wrap-up action for the day at 11:15 p.m. when they face host UNLV.

Oregon struck first, recording the first run of the game on a Lancer error in the bottom of the second inning, bringing in Nina Bryant for the 1-0 lead for the ducks.

The score would remain that way until the sixth inning, as Longwood recorded its first hit of the game off a single from Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Ca. (Irvine) to put runners at first and second with no outs.  Hooe led off the inning and reached first after being hit by a pitch and moved to second base on Ketsdever’s single.  Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) reached first on a fielder’s choice that moved Hooe to third while Ketsdever was thrown out at second, to put runners at the corners with one out.  After Washington stole second to put both base runners in scoring position, Hooe took advantage of a pitch that got past Oregon’s catcher to tie the score at 1-1.  Washington however was stranded at third base as the Ducks got the Lancers’ next two batters to retire in order to end the threat.

Oregon went on to score two runs in the bottom of the inning, after Jennifer Salling hit a two run homerun over the left field fence to take a 3-1 lead.  The Lancers were unable to get going in the seventh as all three batters went down in order.  Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) pitched the whole way, surrendering three runs on five hits, walking two and fanning two in six innings of play.
