WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University women’s lacrosse was shut out in the second half of Thursday’s 24-6 loss at William and Mary, falling to 0-3 on the season while the Tribe improves to 1-1 on the year. The Lancers were led by Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) who tallied two goals and an assist in the loss. Longwood will return to action on Sunday, March 4, as they host Denver in a 1 p.m. match-up.
William and Mary struck first at the 29:40 mark for the early 1-0 lead, but the Lancers answered right back on their next time down the field as Strain netted her first of two goals 26 seconds later knotting the score at 1-1. The Tribe’s offense went to work after that scoring six goals in the next ten minutes to build a 7-1 lead with 19:27 to go before the half. Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario (Lorne Park Secondary School) took a pass from Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount De Sales Academy) and snuck it past William and Mary’s keeper to end the Lancer’s drought and bring the visitors within five with 78:23 to go in the half.
After two Tribe goals, Longwood came right back to score two goals of their own less than a minute apart with 12:10 to go in the opening half. Strain led the charge, as the senior recorded the first goal on a free position shot and assisted on Page Farmer’s/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) a short time later to put the score at 9-4. Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) converted a free position shot of her own later in the half to bring Longwood within six with less than nine minutes remaining. William and Mary though, went on a four goal run to grab a 15-5 lead before Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (The John Carroll School) took a pass from Warehime and put it in the back of the net with 0:01 remaining for the 15-6 halftime score.
That’s as close as Longwood got as the Tribe shut out the Lancers in the final thirty minutes for the 24-6 win. Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) and Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) each saw time in the net. Holliday recorded the start and made eight saves in 63:06 of time, surrendering 14 goals while Coughter logged 14:06 of time and made three saves while giving up ten goals.
