BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood softball continued to roll in the second game of the Lancer Spring Classic grabbing a 3-2 win over Canisius in game two of the tournament. The Lancers will wrap up action with Cleveland State later this evening. Game time slated for 7 p.m.
Longwood and Canisius battled the whole way through in game two, having the game be decided in the final inning of play. The Lancers jumped on the board first in the top half of the third inning, as Hooe hit a lead-off single and made her way to second after Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) was hit by a pitch. Hooe came in on a single off the bat of Washington to give Longwood a 1-0 lead. After the Griffins answered in the bottom half of the inning on a run of their own, the Lancers came right back in the fourth when Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) drew a lead-off walk and made her way to third on a Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) single and wild pitch crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Washington to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead. Canisius came right back in the bottom half of the inning knotting the game at two, which would stay that way until the decisive seventh inning.
Ketsdever and Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) each drew walks to put two on with no one out in the seventh. Kaitlyn McKeown/Gordonsville (Orange County) brought in what proved to be the winning run on single, bringing Ketsdever in from second for the 3-2 lead. Longwood continued to threaten later in the line-up but was unable to bring in an insurance run as the Griffins defense buckled down to keep the game within striking distance.
The one run lead would be all Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) would need as the junior got the final three batters in the bottom half of the inning out to preserve the 3-2 win. Mills pitched all seven innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
