Baseball Takes Series Finale At Wofford; Lancers Win 12-4

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University took a 12-4 college baseball road decision past Wofford College of the Southern Conference Sunday in Spartanburg, South Carolina; winning two of the three season-opening games against the Terriers (1-2). The Lancers (2-1) scored 11 runs in the third inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run from freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-4, 4 RBI), also his first collegiate home run. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, February 7, at Big South Conference member High Point University in North Carolina beginning at 2:30 p.m..

In the three-game series finale, Longwood pounded-out 14 hits with nine coming in the decisive third inning. The Lancers opened the scoring with a run in the second inning as freshman David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-3, RBI) singled to score classmate Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (3-4, 2 RBI) who had also singled. Wofford, however, plated two runs in its half of the second when John Brandt hit a two-run home run to give the hosts an early 2-1 lead.

Longwood quickly took control in the third frame with the 11 runs on nine hits. Senior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4, RBI) drove-in the first run with an RBI single, scoring freshman Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (3-5, RBI) who had singled to open the inning. Classmate Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (0-4, RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to score Berry who had reached base when hit by a pitch. Havers followed with a two-run single to score sophomore Paul Heidler II/ Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4, RBI) and Childress. Heidler had walked and stole a base previously. Freshman Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-5, RBI) later added an RBI single to score Havers, and Ellis collected an RBI single to score Smiy who had singled as well. After a stolen base by Ellis and a walk to senior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (0-3), Berry stepped to the plate and blasted his grand slam over the left field fence. The visitors closed-out the big inning with another run on an RBI single by Heidler to score Childress who followed Berry’s homer with a double.

Wofford added lone runs in both the third and seventh innings, respectively, getting solo home runs from Brandon Waring and Neil Robinette, respectively.

Junior John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (1-0) earned the pitching win for Longwood with the first 6.0 innings, scattering four hits and three earned runs with one strikeout. Freshman Jake Yocum/Thurmont, Md. (Catoctin) was among three others on the mound for the Lancers and tossed one scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts.
