GAME 2 BOX SCORE
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University split its 2007 season-opening baseball doubleheader at Wofford College Saturday in Spartanburg, South Carolina; winning the second game 6-2 after losing the first game 3-1. The Lancers (1-1) and Terriers (1-1) will play their three-game series finale on Sunday, February 4, at 1 p.m. in South Carolina.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored two runs in the first inning before adding one run each in the fourth and sixth innings and two more runs in the seventh inning for the road victory. Sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-3, 3 RBI) had two doubles, the first of which came in the first inning when he blasted a shot down the right field line to drive in redshirt junior Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (0-3) to give Longwood a 1-0 lead. Heidler scored a batter later when sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, RBI) singled up the middle. Wofford answered in the bottom of the second when Adam Kearney doubled off the right field wall and scored on a single by Adam Wood who later scored on a throwing error. The Lancers reclaimed the lead at 3-2 in the fourth when senior pinch hitter Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-1, 2 RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Heidler. Longwood’s two runs in the seventh came on Heidler’s second double, this one of the two-run variety. Sophomore Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-0) earned the mound win with the first 5.0 innings, scattering four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Senior Needham Jones III/Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (1) closed-out the final two scoreless innings, allowing no hits with one strikeout for his first save.
In the opener, Longwood managed just one run and five hits off Wofford’s Austin Redwine (1-0) who recorded his 14th career victory with five strikeouts. Redwine outdueled senior Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (0-1) who was on the preseason Wallace Watch List. McCullough allowed nine hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. The Lancers’ lone run came on an RBI double from Quigley (2-2, RBI) in the sixth inning, while Heidler (2-3) also collected two hits with a double as well. Senior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) pitched the final 1.2 shutout innings and gave up just one hit. John Brandt staked the Terriers to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer to left leading off the second inning, and the hosts added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings as well, the latter on an infield RBI single by Brandt.
