BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-1 baseball decision to visiting William and Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tuesday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (7-5) were led by freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-4, RBI) who had an RBI double, while the Tribe (5-6) got three hits from Greg Sexton (3-5), including a double as well. Longwood will play again Wednesday, February 28, hosting another CAA member, James Madison University, at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..

Following four scoreless innings, Longwood took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (0-2) drew a two-out walk and crossed the plate on Berry’s run-producing double to right-center field. It would prove to be the only run scored by the Lancers, though, as the home team managed just one other hit in the contest -- that by sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-4).

William and Mary responded with three runs in the sixth inning on four hits and a bases-loaded walk as well. The Tribe began the inning with three-straight singles by Sexton, Mike Sheridan (2-4), and Ben Guez (2-4), respectively, to load the bases. After a fly-ball out, Lanny Stanfield (0-2, RBI) drew the walk to score Sexton, and James Williamson (1-4, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run single through the left-side and the two-run advantage on the scoreboard that would become the final margin.

Longwood junior John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-2) took the pitching loss with the first 5.1 innings, yielding 10 hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) tossed the final 3.2 scoreless innings for the Lancers, scattering three hits.

William and Mary freshman Tyler Truxell (1-1) earned the mound win with the first 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and three walks. Senior Warrik Staines (1) got the save with the final 2.0 scoreless innings for the Tribe, allowing no hits with two strikeouts.
