Felipe Montenegro Joins Lancer Tennis Staff

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University head tennis coach Pat Breen has announced the appointment of Felipe Montenegro as assistant coach of the program. Montenegro joins the Lancers after serving as an assistant coach for the men’s tennis program at Drake University from 2004-06 and also was a co-director of the Junior Tennis Academy in Des Moines, Iowa from 2005-06.

"Felipe is a great addition to Longwood Tennis,” said Breen. “He brings a ton of high energy and a great work ethic to the program. Felipe's international playing experience and extensive tennis teaching background will be a great asset in coaching the men's and women's teams. I look forward to working with him."

Montenegro, was a four-year letterwinner at Drake and during his senior season held the #1 spot, while also named co-captain of the team. During his four-year tenure with the Bulldogs, Montenegro reached #43 in the ITA Division I collegiate doubles ranking. Montenegro also played professional tennis after graduation and was ranked #1396 on the ATP tour.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with a team with such high potential and expectations,” stated Montenegro. “I am looking forward to the process of making Longwood University a competitive program in Division I athletics."

Originally from San Jose, Costa Rica, Montenegro was ranked #1 in his country and ranked in the top 100 for juniors in the world for both singles and doubles. Montenegro was also a Davis Cup member for six years.

Montenegro graduated from Drake University in 2005 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.
