BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University women’s lacrosse rallied late in the second half but was unable to overcome an eight goal deficit with 5:53 remaining in the game in Thursday’s 16-12 loss to Albany.   Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) led the way for the Lancers (0-2) finishing the match-up with three points on two goals and an assist, while the Great Danes (1-1) were led by Brittany Scott’s four goals.  Longwood will look to rebound on Thursday, March 1, as they travel to Williamsburg to take on William and Mary for a 4 p.m. match-up.

Albany jumped out to a quick four goal lead 5:30 into the match-up, as the Great Dane offense found early holes in the Longwood defense for the four goal cushion early on.  The Lancers however regrouped and came right back, as Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario (Lorn Park Secondary) and Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 22:42 to go in the half.  After Albany’s Sarah Spillett found the back of the net, Longwood’s Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md (Calvert) and Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) brought the home squad within one with 6:37 to go before the break.  The Great Danes’ however, closed the half strong outscoring the Lancers 4-1 in the final 5:35 of the half, two of which came from the stick of Scott, for the 9-5 halftime lead.

Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) relived Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) in net for the Lancers at the start of the second half.  Holliday finished the game with 11 saves in thirty minutes of action.

Longwood began the uphill battle right off the opening whistle in the second half, as Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) scored just 0:26 into the second frame to put the score at 9-6.  Albany began to push the game out of reach of the Lancers with 11:07 to go, scoring three goals in a 5:56 span, for a 16-8 lead with 5:53 to go in the game.  Longwood pressed the Great Danes’ new keeper Kaite Neer in the final five minutes, but the eight goal Albany lead was too much to over come.

Coughter finished the game with six saves in thirty minutes of action, while Albany was anchored by Jen Daly who recorded five saves in 54:07 of action.  Neer held onto the win in the net, making one save in the final five minutes.
