Jon Quigley, Phil Cerreto Earn Division I Independent Baseball Honors

Sophomore Catcher Jon Quigley Named DI Independent Baseball Player of the Week

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) and freshman Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) have earned Division I Independent Baseball weekly honors for their efforts last week. Quigley has been named the Independent Player of the Week, while Cerreto has been named the Independent Newcomer of the Week. The Lancers are currently 7-2 after their first-ever win past Old Dominion (6-4) on Tuesday at Lancer Stadium, and are atop the standings among the 13 independent schools sponsoring baseball.

Quigley, a second-year catcher, hit .556 (5-9) in four games (4-0) last week for Longwood (6-2), including one double, five RBI, and three runs scored along with a .750 on-base percentage (five walks, two hit-by-pitches) and a .667 slugging percentage. Among the four home wins, he was 3-3 (2B) with a run and four RBI during a 13-1 win past visiting Saint Peter’s (Feb. 17) and 2-4 with an RBI during a come-from-behind 7-6 win past the Peacocks in the series finale (Feb. 18). On the season, Quigley is hitting .579 with three doubles, eight RBI, and four runs scored while also perfect in the field through 29 chances (22 putouts, seven assists).

Cerreto, a first-year infielder, hit .455 (5-11) in four games (4-0) last week for Longwood (6-2), including two doubles, five RBI, and one run scored along with a a .636 slugging percentage and a .455 on-base percentage. Among the four home wins, he was 2-3 (2B) with a run and three RBI during a 13-1 win past visiting Saint Peter’s (Feb. 17) and 2-3 with an RBI during a come-from-behind 7-6 win past the Peacocks in the series finale (Feb. 18). On the season, Cerreto is hitting .435 with two doubles, six RBI, and two runs scored while also perfect in the field through 21 chances (six putouts, 15 assists).

Longwood will play again this weekend, February 24-25, hosting Lafayette College for a three-game series. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (2/24) at noon, and a single game on Sunday (2/25) at 1 p.m..
