Women's Lacrosse Falls At Home To #13 Richmond 14-3

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University opened its 2007 women’s lacrosse campaign Friday afternoon with a 14-3 loss to the University of Richmond, ranked #13 in the preseason IWLCA National Poll, at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The nationally-ranked Spiders (1-0) received five goals from Mandy Friend, while the Lancers (0-1) had three players score one goal each including senior Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson). Longwood will play again next Thursday, Feb. 22, hosting the University of Albany at 4 p.m..

Richmond took control of the match quickly with four goals in the first 4:32, and led 10-0 just 20:25 into the contest en route to a comfortable 13-0 advantage at the intermission. Mandy Friend scored four of her five goals in the opening half, while teammate Morghan Vahue added three goals in the first 30 minutes as well, while Ashley Friend, Jenna Hubbard, and Erin Kennedy each contributed two first-half goals for the Spiders.

Longwood finally got on the board early in the second half, though after Richmond’s Mandy Friend tallied her game-high fifth goal for a 14-0 lead. Sophomore Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) tallied the first Lancer goal with 23:15 remaining, and the hosts added two more goals over the final 8:30 as Berry and sophomore Britt Farguharson/Mississauga, Ontario (Lorne Park Secondary) each scored. Sophomore Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) and senior Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) each contributed assists for the Lancers. Allison Furstenburg led Richmond with three assists.

Richmond keeper Jackie Swansburg started and played 51:59 while allowing two goals with nine saves. Reserve keeper Erica Marrocco played 8:01 and yielded one goal with one save for the Spiders. Longwood starting junior keeper Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) started and played 52:07, yielding 12 goals with one save, while freshman Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) played 7:53 and allowed two goals with one save as well.
