Men's Basketball Falls At Virginia 90-49

Senior Maurice Sumter Scores 15 Points, Adds Career-High Five Blocks At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 90-49 men’s basketball decision at the University of Virginia Tuesday night in Charlottesville at the new John Paul Jones Arena. The Lancers (8-19) were led by senior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) with 15 points, adding a career-high and game-high five blocks. The Cavaliers (17-7) of The ACC were led by junior Sean Singletary with game-highs of 19 points and seven assists. Longwood returns home to host Liberty University of the Big South Conference on Thursday, Feb. 15, in Willett Hall on-campus beginning at 7 p.m..

Virginia opened the contest by making nine of its first 12 shots, including four three-pointers by Singletary, to lead 22-2 just 5:17 into the game. Longwood tried to get back into the contest after the early blitz, outscoring the Cavaliers 20-17 to climb within 39-22 at 6:25 after consecutive three-pointers from junior Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder). It would be as close as the Lancers would get, though, as UVA finished the half with a 14-7 run to lead comfortably at the intermission – 53-29.

Virginia stretched its advantage early in the second half, leading 69-39 at 13:35 as five different players scored during the 16-10 run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Singletary and J.R. Reynolds. Longwood was able to score five unanswered points to narrow the margin to 25 points at 69-44 with 12:36 remaining but would get no closer. The Cavaliers outscored the Lancers 21-5 over the final 10:34, including the last 10 points of the game during the final 3:46 while getting two more three-pointers as well.

Sumter finished with 15 points, five rebounds, a career-high and game-high five blocks, three assists, and one steal to lead Longwood. He was 6-13 from the field, including 2-5 on three-pointers, and 1-1 at the line though it appeared he could have had more opportunities at the charity stripe -- hitting the floor four or five times in the second half when only three personal fouls were whistled on the hosts. Senior Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. Fashion Institute) added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Lancers. LU shot just 26% (16-62) from the field, including 29% (6-21) on three-pointers, and 73% (11-15) at the line.

Singletary finished with a game-high 19 points, including 5-10 three-pointers, adding a game-high seven assists to lead Virginia. The Cavaliers had four other players reach double-figure scoring, including Mamadi Diane (13), Laurynas Mikalauskas (12), Reynolds (11), and Adrian Joseph (11). UVA shot 48% (36-75) from the field, including 61% (22-36) in the first half, 39% (9-23) on three-pointers, and 50% (9-18) at the line. The Cavs out-rebounded Longwood 52-36, and also blocked 12 shots in the contest.
