BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University women’s basketball gave a valiant effort in the 64-48 loss to the visiting VCU Rams Friday evening at Willett Hall.  The Lancers (6-7) came out strong against VCU (8-1) and led for most of the game, but a late eight point run by the Rams proved to be the difference maker in the contest.  The Lancers will return to action on December 30, when they travel to Wake Forest for a 5:30 p.m. match-up.  The game will open a seven day road trip as Longwood will travel to the Northeast for three games in the beginning of January.

Sophomore Becky Fernandes/Fairfax (Bishop Ireton) completed a three-point play hitting a lay-up while being fouled and sunk the free throw a short time later for the 7-6 score with 15:26 left in the half.  The Lancers caught VCU in a quick transition on their next possession as senior Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) took an outlet pass from Odessa Williams/Stratford, Conn. (Stratford) and hit a jumper along the baseline for the 9-6 lead.  VCU’s D’andra Moss hit a pair of free throws to send the teams into the second media timeout with the score knotted 13-13 with 11:44 left in the half.

Out of the break, freshman Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) sunk a three pointer, but VCU hit one of its own on the next trip down the floor to keep the game tied.  Longwood put together a quick five point run as junior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) hit a jumper in the paint and Garrison followed with a three pointer for the 21-16 Longwood lead with 9:53 left in he half.  After a Ram 12-2 run, Longwood closed the half strong and put together a 7-1 run for the final three minutes to grab the one point halftime lead.

Longwood picked up where they left off in the second half, as the home squad scored on its first two possessions of the half as junior Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) sunk a three and Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) put back a rebound for Longwood’s biggest lead of the game, six points early in the second.  After the lay-up by Steg at 18:42 Longwood struggled from the floor having its next five points come from the foul line, giving VCU a nine point lead with 10:23 left in the game.  Small ended the drought with 9:02 on the clock on a jumper at the elbow.  Williams hit a jumper with 5:19 left in the game to cut the deficit to six but VCU’s Kita Waller hit a three on the Rams’ following possession to push the game out of reach of the Lancers.

Williams paced Longwood recording 14 points and seven rebounds while Small tallied ten points and nine assists in the contest.  VCU’s Moss recorded a game high 20 points while Krystal Vaughn and LaKea Jones each contributed 10 and 11 points respectively.  VCU shot 40.0% from the floor while the Lancers shot 35.8%.
