BALTIMORE, Md. -- Longwood University dropped a 76-51 men’s basketball decision on the road at Morgan State University Friday night in Baltimore. The Lancers (3-11) trailed just 31-29 at halftime before the Bears (6-4) outscored them 45-22 in the second half. Junior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC) led LU with 16 points, while Jamar Smith led MSU with 21 points. Longwood will play again on Sunday, December 23, at George Washington University of the Atlantic 10 Conference in Washington, D.C. beginning at 2 p.m..
Longwood and Morgan State started slowly before the Bears opened a 21-10 lead at 11:31 of the first half. The Lancers battled back, though, and tied the game at 27-27 with 2:24 left until halftime after a 17-6 run sparked by eight points from junior Kirk Williams/White Plains, N.Y. (Woodlands), including a pair of three-point field goals. The hosts, however, led 31-29 at the intermission after back-to-back layups to close the period.
Morgan State continued with its momentum in the second half and built a 50-31 advantage at 12:07, outscoring Longwood 19-2 over the first 7:53. The Lancers trailed 56-36 with 9:02 remaining before a 10-2 run narrowed the margin to 58-46 at 6:36. The Bears, though, pulled away down the stretch with an 18-5 run over the final 5:54 to secure the home win.
Bogan finished with 16 points to lead Longwood, while Williams added 13 points for the Lancers. LU shot 42% (16-38) from the field, including 36% (5-14) on three-point field goals, and 58% (14-24) at the free throw line.
Smith finished with 21 points to lead Morgan State, while Marquis Kately, a transfer from California, added 14 points for the Bears. MSU shot 52% (28-54) from the field, including 36% (5-14) on three-pointers, and 65% (15-23) at the line.
