BOX SCORE

OREM, Utah -- Longwood University took a 3-0 women’s soccer victory past Howard University Friday in a United Soccer Conference Tournament Semifinal match played in Orem, Utah. The #1 seeded Lancers led 1-0 at the intermission, and are now 10-8-1 overall while the #4 seeded Bison ended their season at 3-16 overall. Longwood will play again on Sunday, November 11, at 2 p.m. for the USC Tournament Championship against either #2 Utah Valley or #3 NJIT who played in Friday’s second semifinal contest at Utah Valley University.

Longwood controlled the action against Howard as sophomore Tia Nardella/Brookline, Mass. (Brookline) scored a goal at 5:56 when she went one-on-one to beat the keeper after a nice cross from junior Ingrid Hale/Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield) for the early 1-0 advantage. The Lancers added two goals early in the second half, the first from senior Brittany Stubbs/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) at 50:34 on a header from a free kick by freshman Lauren Trizna/Manassas (Osbourn Park) from 35-yards out, and the other final goal at 54:05 when sophomore Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) took a rebound off a miss to score her team-best sixth goal of the season.

Longwood took an 18-8 advantage in shots, including 11-2 on-goal, while Howard had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. The Lancers played two keepers as senior Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) started and went the first 60:38, while redshirt-freshman Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the final 29:22 with two saves. Jessamyn Perkins played the duration for the Bison with eight saves.

Lancers Nearly Sweep All-Conference Honors
Longwood garnered three of the four top conference awards at the USC Tournament Banquet Thursday night, including Coach of the Year Todd Dyer, Defensive Player of the Year Anne Whitmore, and Rookie of the Year Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge). In addition, the Lancers placed five players on the All-Conference First-Team: Whitmore, Stubbs, DeSieno, senior Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial), and sophomore Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield). Myers was an All-Conference Second-Team selection as well.
