FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University rallied with three goals midway through the second half en route to 3-2 men’s soccer victory past Adelphi University Friday at the Athletic Complex in an Atlantic Soccer Conference Tournament Semifinal match played in Farmville. The #2 seeded Lancers trailed 1-0 at the intermission before the second-half comeback and are now 8-8-2 overall, while the #3 seeded Panthers ended their season at 4-11-3 overall. Longwood will play again on Sunday, November 18, at the Athletics Complex beginning at 2 p.m. for the ASC Tournament Championship against #1 Florida Atlantic who defeated #4 NJIT in Friday’s other semifinal contest at the conference tournament being hosted by the Lancers.
Adelphi had the one-goal lead at the intermission of the highly-competitive and intense match courtesy an early goal from ASC Player of the Year Patrick Figueiredo at 5:03. Figueiredo followed his own shot attempt off the keeper’s hands to score his 12th goal of the year. It remained a 1-0 advantage for the Panthers through halftime before Longwood took advantage of a three-goal blitz during a 9:51 span about midway of the final period to move on the the conference tournament championship on Sunday.
Sophomore Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon), a second-team ASC pick, tallied the first goal for the hosts at 68:34 when he took a nice pass off the left side from senior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) and finished with a one-touch into the net. Freshman Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park), also a second-team ASC pick, scored minutes later at 73:03, beating the keeper to the lower left corner after a feed up the middle from sophomore Brian Germain/McLean (Langley). Headley added the game-winning goal a few minutes later at 78:25, this time unassisted when he beat the keeper outside the box one-on-one for a 3-1 advantage. The visitors closed to within 3-2 on a late penalty-kick goal by Figueiredo at 81:26 following a foul in the box against the Lancers, but got no closer.
Longwood and Adelphi each took nine shots, though the Lancers had an 8-5 advantage on-goal, while each squad had five corner kicks. Senior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) (90:00), a first-team ASC choice, played the entire match in front of the net with three saves. Vincent Treglia (90:00) also went the distance in goal for the Panthers with five saves.
Longwood has now won five-straight matches and will face top-seeded Florida Atlantic in Sunday’s finale. The Owls defeated NJIT 1-0 earlier Friday and have now won six out of their last nine matches (6-1-2), including a 2-1 victory over the Lancers back on October 13 in Farmville as well.
