BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer continued to roll Saturday afternoon, defeating Howard 1-0 for its fourth win in a row.  Longwood improves to 7-8-2 and 3-2-0 in conference play while Howard falls to 3-8-5 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.  With the win Longwood earned a berth in the Atlantic Soccer Conference Tournament held next weekend.  Times and dates for the tournament will be announced early this week.

In a physical match-up Longwood suffered a tough blow in the opening four minutes, as a Lancer defender drew a whistle on a tough tackle and was given a red card, leaving Longwood a man down for the remainder of the game.  Longwood however remained to battle and was able to earn a penalty kick just eight minutes in the game as junior Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) went up for a 50/50 ball in the box with the Bison keeper.  Dixon was pulled down on the play and the referee signaled for a penalty kick.  Senior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) took the kick and beat Howard’s Victor Thomas for the 1-0 lead.

Even playing one man down, the Lancers continued to press the Howard defense and created opportunities in the Bison’s 18-yard box.  Harney was all over the field and almost tacked on his second goal of the game just putting a shot wide of the Howard net on a Longwood corner.

The physical play picked up out of the halftime break, as the two squads drew 17 fouls in the final 45:00 of the game.  With the Lancers pressing midway through the half, a Howard defender served a ball to Guilherme Fonseca that split two Lancer defenders.  Fonseca carried the ball down the field for the one-on-one with senior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) but was tracked down by junior Nate Van Arsdale/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) and classmate Trey Thornton/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) to keep the game at 1-0 in Longwood’s favor.  The Lancers buckled down on defense and kept everything away from the Longwood net to gain the win.

Youmans finished the game three saves while Thomas tallied one.  Howard out shot Longwood 11-8 while each squad recorded three corner kicks.
