BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey fell to the visiting Pacific Tigers 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The loss puts the Lancers at 5-10 on the year and 1-3 in conference play, while Pacific improves to 3-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Longwood will look to rebound when they travel to Norfolk on Saturday, October 13, as it faces Duke in a 12 p.m. match-up at Old Dominion. The Blue Devils are currently ranked twelfth in the country in the 2007 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
Pacific controlled the opening minutes of the game, pinning the Lancers deep in their end. After a quick move by Pacific’s Kedibone Leubane along the backline, the Tiger forward made a move back into the center, but senior keeper
Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) poked the ball away from Leubane that was cleared out by a Longwood defender.
The Lancers put together a strong offensive threat midway through the half, pressing the Tigers’ defense and keeper Lauren Woods. With 15:15 remaining before halftime the Lancers put together a give and go with senior
Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) and sophomore
Melissa Strickland/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne). Strickland gave a pass to Newbold and made a run down the left side of the circle, but the returning pass from Newbold was just out of reach of Stickland keeping the game at 0-0. Longwood continued to keep the pressure on and looked to go ahead after Strickland knocked in a loose ball in a scramble in front of the Tiger goal but the ball was knocked out before it could pass the line.
On its third penalty corner of the afternoon, Pacific was able to capitalize on a shot that squirted under Schmitz, which was hit in by Rachel Taylor sending the teams into halftime with the score at 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
Pacific was able to score two goals in the second half, to push the game out of reach of the Lancers. Schmitz saw all 70:00 of action saving eight while Woods also went the distance, making four saves. Pacific held a 16-9 advantage in shots while Longwood recorded seven penalty corners and Pacific tallied five.
