BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer gave up a late goal to the visiting Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners falling 2-1 Saturday evening at the Athletics Complex. The loss puts the Lancers at 3-5-2 on the year while CSU Bakersfield improves to 3-8-3 on the year. Longwood will return to action on Saturday, October 13, when they host Florida Atlantic for a 7 p.m. Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up.
In a physical match-up and midfield battle for most of the game, CSU Bakersfield had the first scoring opportunity of the game. Manny Guzman received a through ball and dribbled into the Longwood box, but senior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) came charging out and knocked the ball off the feet of Guzman to keep the game scoreless. The Roadrunners broke onto the scoreboard first as Guzman received a centering pass from Manny Garcia and fired into the Lancers’ net for the 1-0 lead with 32:20 left in the half.
The Lancers quickly regrouped and came right back down the field to knot the score at one with a goal from junior
Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) less than two minutes later. Freshman
Yaron Bacher/Marietta, Ga. (Walton) picked off a Roadrunner pass along the left sideline and passed the ball down low to sophomore
Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) who one timed the ball to the center of the box that Dixon ran on to and put a foot on it to knot the game at one with 30:41 remaining in the half.
Youmans kept the game at 1-1 when he made a diving save on a header from Oscar Coppieters off a free-kick for the Roadrunners with less than five minutes remaining in the half.
The two teams continued to battle early in the second half and Longwood was able to earn a penalty kick after sophomore
Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) was pulled down in the box sending sophomore
Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) to take the kick. Vickerton fired a shot on net, but the Roadrunners’ keeper Steve Trojanowskil stopped the shot and had the rebound bounce out to senior
Elvis Cosic/Richmond (J.R. Tucker) who headed the ball just wide with 30:45 left in the game.
Both teams continued to test each defense but both stood strong until the 85th minute where the Roadrunners capitalized on a Lancer mistake on a free kick. As the ball was served into the Longwood 18-yard box, senior Trey Thornton/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) went up strong and knocked the ball right into the back of another Lancer defender and was picked up by Coppieters who fired a shot from about eight yards out and score to put CSU ahead from good.
Youmans finished the game with six saves while Trojanowskil tallied eight. Longwood outshot the Roadrunners 20-13 while Bakersfield recorded six corner kicks and Longwood tallied three.
