BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 women’s soccer home victory past visiting United Soccer Conference (USC) opponent Delaware State University Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Sophomore Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) scored the only goal of the game late in the first half for what proved to be the game-winner in the conference match. The Lancers improved to 4-5 overall, remaining unbeaten at 3-0 in the USC, while Delaware State dropped to 2-6-1, 0-1 in the USC. Longwood will play again on Tuesday, October 9, at nearby Liberty University in Lynchburg beginning at 7 p.m..
DeSieno’s decisive goal came just before the intermission at 41:43 when she received a nice through-ball pass from classmate Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) and one-timed the ball past the visiting keeper into the net. It was DeSieno’s team-best third goal of the season and fifth of her young career at Longwood. Fening’s assist was her team-best second of the campaign and fourth of her brief career with the Lancers.
Longwood took a 20-2 advantage in shots, including 11-1 on-goal, and had a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks as well. Senior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) only had to make one save while playing the duration in front of the net for the Lancers, supported by an outstanding defensive effort from the defenders and midfielders. It was Whitmore’s second shutout of the year, and the 10th of her career. Casey Murphy made 10 saves for Delaware State.
The home triumph also marked the 150th career coaching victory for 14th-year Longwood head coach Todd Dyer ‘93, who founded the women’s soccer program in 1994. Coach Dyer has led the program to nine 10-plus win seasons in his previous 13 years, including 11-5-1 a year ago, and successfully through the Division I Reclassification over the past four seasons (32-34-5). Coach Dyer has a career coaching record of 150-85-12.
