BERKELEY, Calif.-- Longwood University field hockey fell to the first place California Golden Bears 8-0 Tuesday evening in Berkeley, Calif.. The match-up is the Lancers’ final regular season game where Longwood finished 6-14 overall and 2-4 in conference play while Cal finished 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Longwood who will end up seeded #5, will open play in the NorPac Conference Tournament on Thursday, November 1, when they face the #4 seeded Davidson Wildcats in a 1 p.m. (ET) match-up.
The Golden Bears pressured early and went up 1-0 6:02 into the game on a goal by Jennifer Crane with an assist coming from Christina McGrath. Cal built a 3-0 lead on a pair of goals four minutes by Ashley Glosz and Caitlin Byrne and added a fourth goal late in the half off the stick of McGrath to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
California went on to score four more goals in the second half to take the regular season finale match-up for each team. Senior keeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) tallied nine saves in 70:00 of action while Cal was anchored by Liz Braasch and Kelly Knoche who each saw time in the contest. Longwood’s lone shot of the contest came off the stick of senior Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) in the second half. The Golden Bears held a 19-1 advantage in shots and 13-1 edge in penalty corners.
