RICHMOND, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey continued to roll Wednesday evening, as the Lancers defeated VCU, 3-1 in Richmond for their second consecutive win putting them at 4-9 on the year. The Lancers will host a pair of games this weekend, as they take on Appalachian State Saturday, October 6, and close the weekend with a NorPac conference match-up with Pacific on Sunday, both games are slated for a 12 p.m. start.
Longwood started the scoring off early, as the Lancers were able to cash in on a penalty corner scored by senior
Mary Freeman/Fredericksburg (Stafford). Senior
Katie Claxton/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) took the ball up top and found Freeman along the left side and gave her a pass that Freeman slid past the Rams’ keeper for the 1-0 lead. VCU was able to put back a rebound that bounced off senior goalie
Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) to knot the score at one with 15:25 to go in the half. The Lancers got the go ahead goal with 7:37 left before the break, when Claxton took a pass from senior
Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) and put it past the Rams' keeper, for a 2-1 Longwood advantage.
The Lancers continued their strong play out of the halftime, keeping the majority of play in the VCU defensive zone. Claxton knocked in her team leading fourth goal of the season, on a penalty corner, taking a pass from junior
Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium) and slamming it past the Rams’ keeper for the 3-1 lead that would remain for the final.
Schmitz finished the game with seven saves while VCU’s Brittany LoVullo tallied two. VCU held a 11-8 margin in shot while Longwood recorded seven penalty corners and the Rams recorded three.
