BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 5-1 women’s soccer victory past visiting Charleston Southern University Monday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers scored a season-high five goals during the home triumph while winning their third-straight match, and are now 9-6-1 overall while the Buccaneers are now 10-6 overall. Longwood will play again on Thursday, November 1, hosting Virginia Tech at the Athletics Complex as the Hokies visit Farmville for the first-time ever in women’s soccer beginning at 7 p.m.. There is free admission to all fall home athletics events at Longwood.
Longwood controlled the action against Charleston Southern from the start, and freshman Katie Devlin/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) tallied her first career goal at 13:58 on a corner-kick opportunity. Devlin played the corner serve from senior Katie Young/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) off the keeper’s hands into the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage. The Lancers scored the decisive goal shortly thereafter when freshman Lauren Trizna/Manassas (Osbourn Park) finished a free kick from Young into the net for her second goal of the season. LU led 3-0 at halftime after junior Ingrid Hale/Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield) beat the CSU keeper off direct through-passes from freshmen Halie Romasco/Yorktown (Grafton) and Joanna Montefinese/Howell, N.J. (Howell). It was Hale’s first goal of the year, and the first assist of the season for Romasco, while the second assist this fall for Montefinese.
Charleston Southern scored early in the second half to narrow the margin to 3-1 on a goal by Marky Boyce, her seventh of the season on a loose ball in the box. Longwood, however, quickly made sure that the Buccaneers would not gain momentum when sophomore Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) took a rebound off a miss just 1:07 later to score her team-best fifth goal of the campaign at 50:26. Classmate Tia Nardella/Brookline, Mass. (Brookline) closed-out the scoring at 59:39 as she placed a left-footed shot from the right-side into the upper right corner from just outside the box at about 20 yards.
Longwood took a 16-9 advantage in shots, including 9-3 on-goal, and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks as well. The Lancers played two keepers as senior Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) started and went the first 59:39, allowing one goal with one save while redshirt-freshman Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) went the final 30:21 with one save as well. Jena Uvalle (45:00, 3, 1) and Alyssa Budros (45:00, 2, 3) split time for CSU.
Longwood now leads the overall series between the two schools at 3-1 with three consecutive wins against the Buccaneers. The Lancers also improved to 8-2-1 in their last 11 contests.
