FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer gave up a goal with seven minutes remaining, lifting Navy over the Lancers 2-1, Tuesday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  With the loss Longwood stands at 3-8-2 on the year, while Navy improves to 7-5-2 overall.  The Lancers will return to action on Saturday, October 27, when they host Philadelphia in a 2 p.m. Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up.

Longwood and Navy battled the opening half with no result, as the two squads heading into the halftime break in a scoreless tie.  The action in both offensive ends however picked up in the second half.

The Lancers opened up the scoring on a goal by sophomore Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) seven minutes into the half.  Freshman Yaron acher/Marietta, Ga. (Walton) restarted play on a Longwood free kick and gave sophomore Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) the ball.  Germain carried the ball along the back end line and gave Vickerton a pass that the sophomore one timed in from eight-yards out for the 1-0 lead.

Junior Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) looked to pad the Lancers lead to two, taking a through ball from Germain and firing it on the Midshipmen’s net, but Navy’s keeper Evan Barnes just got a hand on it to keep the game at 1-0.

Navy answered 12:00 later on a corner kick, as Adam Pennington headed in a serve from Mark Garcia to put the score at 1-1 with 26:17 to go in the game.  After a back and forth battle in the midfield, the Mids tallied the go ahead goal on a shot from Garcia from 30-yards out for the 2-1 score.

Longwood continued to battle and had opportunities in the final five minutes but were unable to find the back of the net for the 2-1 final.  Sophomore Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) picked up a loose ball in the box with 4:33 left in the game but ripped the shot just wide.  With seconds left Germain carried the ball into the Midshipmen’s box and was pulled down, but no foul was called ending the threat and the game.
