BOX SCORE
BOONE, N.C.-- Longwood University field hockey tallied a 2-1 conference win over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon, snapping a four game skid.  The win puts Longwood at 6-13 overall and 2-3 in conference play while the Mountaineers stand at 3-14 on the year and 0-5 in the conference.  Longwood will close regular season play on Tuesday, October 30, when they travel to California for a 6 p.m. match-up with California-Berkeley.

ASU opened the scoring 13:06 into the game, as Christine Zanowicz buried a shot past the Lancers’ senior keeper
Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) for the 1-0 edge.  Zanowicz picked up a rebound from a shot by Jess Harris and put it in the cage for the lone goal in the opening 35:00.
Longwood was able to score two goals in six minutes, midway through the second half on an unassisted goal by freshman
Lauren Sullivan/Fredericksburg (Stafford) and senior
Katie Claxton’s/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) team leading ninth goal of the season.  After Sullivan beat all the ASU defenders, the first-year forward took the ball in on the left side of the circle and carried in across the front of the goal and ripped a shot past the Mountaineers’ keeper for the 1-1 score with 20:07 left in the match-up.
The Lancers drew a free hit just outside the circle that sophomore
Sara Aridas/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) sent in and found Claxton’s stick.  Claxton ripped a shot just inside the circle that went through everyone to give Longwood the lead for good and the conference win.
Schmitz finished the game with ten saves in 70:00 of action while ASU’s Denise Adams made 12 saves in the contest.  Longwood out shot the Mountaineers 16-12 and held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.
