BOX SCORE

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 1-0 women’s soccer road decision at Francis Marion University Sunday afternoon in Florence, South Carolina. The Lancers were playing their fourth game in nine days, and third-straight road match this week, as their record moved to 6-6 overall. The Patriots, a Division I independent in women’s soccer, improved to 6-5-1 overall. Longwood will play again on Thursday, October 18, at VMI in Lexington beginning at 4 p.m..

Longwood and Francis Marion battled through a scoreless opening half while tied 0-0 at the intermission. The hosts took advantage of a defensive lapse by the visitors during the opening minute of the second half and scored the lone goal at 45:24. FMU’s Kirby Stenard tallied her ninth goal of the season when she lofted a loose ball over the keeper’s head from inside the box. It would prove the difference in the contest as the Lancers could not convert on several late scoring opportunities while having their three-game winning streak stopped.

Francis Marion took a 10-8 advantage in shots, and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks as well. Senior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) made five saves while playing the duration in front of the net for Longwood. Jacque Sutphin had two saves for the Patriots who now own a 4-1 series advantage since the two schools first played in 1999.
