BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer fell to Florida Atlantic 2-1, on a late Owl goal on Saturday evening at the Athletics Complex.  The loss puts the Lancers at 3-6-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play while FAU improves to 5-6-1  and 2-0-0 in the conference.  Longwood will return to action on Tuesday, October 16, when they travel to Newark, N.J. to take on the NJIT Highlanders in a 7 p.m. Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up.

The Lancers put the pressure on early and were on the door step to open up the scoring on two occasions in the first eight minutes.  Sophomore Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) carried the ball up the left sideline and fired a cross through the six-yard box that went past everyone and cleared out at the other end by an Owl defender.  Longwood kept chipping away at the FAU defense and was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead with 34:39 to go in the half, on a goal by Germain, his first of the season.  Senior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) started things off with a strong punt that was flicked to Germain by junior Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester).  Germain carried the ball in and beat the Owls’ keeper low for the Longwood lead.

With the Lancers up 1-0 FAU came out of halftime and began to press the Lancer defense and Youmans.  The Owls’ Igor Santos fired a hard shot from 25-yards out that just missed the Lancers’ net to keep FAU still in search of a goal.

Longwood came right back and had two chances on the other end, one coming off the foot of senior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) and the other off the head of senior Trey Thornton/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) as the Lancers looked to pad their lead.  Harney took a ball off his chest on a miss played ball by a FAU defender and fired a shot to the near post just inside the 18-yard box, that beat the Owls’ keeper low but was off target keeping the game at 1-0.  Thornton took a serve from Germain and headed it toward the Owls’ net where keeper Phillip Lamarre just got a hand out it to tip it over the cross bar, keeping the FAU deficit at one goal with 28:35 left in the game.

FAU would knot the game at one with 25:15 on the clock, after Santos headed in a cross from Trey McEntee giving momentum to the Owls’ side.  Longwood however, came right back looking for the go ahead goal as senior Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) tried to lead sophomore Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) at the six-yard box, but the second-year player was unable to get a good shot off as a FAU defender was right there with him.  Harney trapped a serve from freshman Yaron Bacher/Marietta, Ga. (Walton) and fired a hard low shot at the Owls’ goal but missed wide keeping the game at 1-1 with 9:19 to go in the game.

FAU tallied the go ahead goal with 6:18 left in the game, on a 20-yard shot by Jordan Kelly that caught the post but still found the back of the net, giving the Owls the lead for good.

Youmans finished the game with two saves while Lamarre also tallied two saves.  FAU outshot Longwood 10-7 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
