ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University took a 2-1 women’s soccer road victory at United Soccer Conference (USC) opponent South Carolina State University Friday night in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Sophomore Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) scored the game-winning goal early in the second half of the league match. The Lancers won their third-straight game, and fifth win in the last six matches to improve to 6-5 overall, remaining unbeaten at 4-0 in the USC, while South Carolina State dropped to 2-9, 0-1 in the USC. Longwood will play again on Sunday, October 14, at Francis Marion University in South Carolina beginning at 2 p.m..

Fening’s decisive goal came at 53:40 on a direct kick over the opponent wall and home keeper’s head into the net. It was Fening’s first goal of the season and sixth of her young career at Longwood. Ironically, Fening had provided the assist on the game’s first goal; scored by freshman Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge) at 52:05 after the two teams battled through a scoreless first half. It was Myers’ second goal of the season, and Fening’s team-best third assist of the campaign, giving her five assists during her career with the Lancers. The Bulldogs avoided the shutout when Bridget Mack scored late at 82:08, assisted by Elizabeth Govrik.

Longwood took a 13-5 advantage in shots, and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks as well. Senior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) made three saves while playing the duration in front of the net for the Lancers. Alechia Brothers had five saves for South Carolina State as the Bulldogs have lost all three matches against Longwood since formation of the USC three years ago.
