PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Longwood University trailed just 41-31 at halftime before falling 107-69 in men’s basketball at Providence College of the BIG EAST Conference Tuesday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Rhode Island. The Lancers (6-11) were led by senior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) with 16 points, while the host Friars (10-3) were led by Jonathan Kale (6-8, 250) with a game-high 18 points and Herbert Hill (6-10, 240) with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Longwood will play again on Saturday, January 6, at Yale University of the Ivy League beginning at 2 p.m. in New Haven, Connecticut.
Providence scored the first seven points of the contest before Longwood tallied five quick points to close to within 7-5 at 16:18. A lay-up from sophomore Kirk Williams/White Plains, N.Y. (Woodlands) had the Lancers within 13-10 at 12:43, but an 18-3 run by the Friars made it 31-13 with 8:31 left before the break. Longwood made its own run, though, and closed to within 36-27 at 2:57 as Sumter scored 10 points during the 14-5 outburst. It was a 10-point margin at the intermission as Providence led 41-31 after shooting 52% (16-31) from the field during the opening 20 minutes.
Longwood climbed to within seven points at 43-36 early in the second half with 18:43 remaining as senior Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) made a three-point field goal. Providence led 45-36 at 18:10 before the Lancer bench was assessed a technical foul at 17:29. The hosts made 1-2 free throws that ignited a 20-4 run for a 65-40 lead with 12:53 left and the game was over for all intents and purposes. The remainder of the contest witnessed 19 combined fouls whistled and 28 combined free throws attempts by the two teams to help provide for the final margin.
Sumter finished with a team-high 16 points to lead Longwood, adding six rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Williams added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Lancers before fouling out with 5:13 remaining, while freshman Billy
Robinson Jr./Columbia, Md. (Hammond) contributed 11 points (3-4 3FG) off the bench in 12 minutes. LU shot 36% (22-62) from the field, including 44% (8-18) on three-point field goals, and 68% (17-25) at the free throw line.
Kale led six double-figure scorers for Providence with his game-high 18 points off the bench, adding eight rebounds. Hill had the double-double of 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Friars, followed by Geoff McDermott (14), Dwain Williams (14), Weyinmi Efejuku (13), and Jamal Barney (13). PC shot 58% (37-64) from the field, including an even-better 64% (21-33) in the second half, 39% (7-18) on three-pointers, and 74% (26-35) at the line. Overall, the two teams were whistled for 46 fouls while combining to shoot 60 free throws – 41 during the final 20 minutes of the contest.
