OREM, Utah – Longwood University dropped an 80-52 men’s basketball decision at Utah Valley State College Monday night in Orem, Utah. The Lancers (6-14) were led by seniors Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute) and Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) with 10 points each, while the Wolverines (11-6) were led by David Heck with a game-high 20 points. Longwood returns to Farmville to host Savannah State University on Saturday, January 20, in Willett Hall on-campus beginning at 2 p.m..
Longwood never led at UVSC as the hosts jumped out to a 14-5 lead just 4:11 into the contest as Heck scored eight quick points, including a pair of three-point field goals. The Lancers closed to within five points at 17-12 with 12:23 left in the period but were no closer for the remainder of the half. The Wolverines led by as many as 15 points in the opening 20 minutes en route to a 36-23 advantage at the intermission.
Longwood was within 50-38 with 13:44 left to play after a pair of free throws by Sumter. It was as close as the visitors would get, however, as Utah Valley State scored nine unanswered points to lead 59-38 at 11:16. The Lancers reduced the margin under 20 points at 59-42 with 9:45 remaining before the Wolverines extended their lead down the stretch, outscoring the visitors 14-6 over the final 5:21 for their largest margin at the end.
Morgan and Sumter each tallied 10 points to lead Longwood as Sumter added a team-high six rebounds and two assists, and Morgan grabbed five rebounds. Junior Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) contributed nine points and two assists for the Lancers. LU shot 35% (18-52) from the field, including 33% (4-12) on three-pointers, and 71% (12-17) at the line.
Heck finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Utah Valley State which improved to 7-1 at home, adding six assists and two blocks. Chris Bailey had 15 points for the Wolverines, followed by Matt Peterson (11) and Richard Troyer (10). UVSC shot 53% (28-53) from the field, including 64% (14-22) in the second half, 39% (7-18) on three-pointers, and 81% (17-21) at the line.
Longwood was playing its 15th game away from Farmville in 20 overall contests this season, and its fourth-straight road game while completing a 16-day road-trip. The Lancers have played 11 of their last 12 games off-campus, and have been away for 25 of the last 32 days (Dec. 16-Jan. 16). Longwood, though, will now play seven of its final 11 games at home in the friendly confines of Willett Hall in Farmville where the program is averaging a school attendance record pace of 1,511 this season during the only three games played with its students on-campus.
