BOX SCORE
LORETTO, Pa. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing 1-0 women’s soccer overtime decision at Saint Francis University Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania. It was the first road match of the young season for the Lancers who are now 2-2-1, while Saint Francis improved to 3-0. Longwood will play again this Sunday afternoon, September 10, hosting The Citadel at the new Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m..
At Saint Francis, the two teams battled evenly throughout while remaining scoreless at the intermission and through the regulation 90 minutes. The host Red Flash finally put a goal on the scoreboard to win the match in overtime at 97:43 as Ashlie Knowles moved the back of the net with an assist from Kirsten Hoffsmith.
“We battled almost long enough,” said 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “We had our scoring chances but just did not take advantage. We got caught flat-footed at the end and they slipped one through and won the match.”
Longwood took a slight 14-13 advantage in shots, and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (97:43, 1ga, 4sv) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers. Melanie Stockman (97:43, 6sv) also went the distance in front of the net for Saint Francis as the Red Flash extended their home unbeaten streak to 12 matches (10-0-2).
