BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer earned a 2-0 win over George Washington Wednesday evening at Longwood’s new Athletics Center in Farmville. Junior Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) led the offensive charge setting up the first goal and netting one of his own less than four minutes later. The win puts the Lancers at 1-4 on the season, while the Colonials fall to 1-2. Longwood will be back in action on Sunday, September 10, when they host High Point at 4:30 p.m..

The Lancers came out from the opening whistle dominating the flow of the game, keeping the pressure on GW’s defense. Sophomore Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) received a through ball from freshman Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) at the edge of the six-yard box, but pulled the shot just wide keeping the game scoreless.

LU did not let up coming out of the halftime break, as freshman Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) hit a shot that sailed just wide, keeping pressure on the opposing defense. Freshman Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) collected his first collegiate goal and Longwood’s first of the season at the 52:59 mark, on a rocket sent from the top of the 18-yard box that went to the top right corner beating keeper Greg Yahr for the 1-0 lead. The Lancers struck less then four minutes later, when freshman Peter Henley/Sabot, Va. (Goochland) sent a ball to Griessbach 20-yards out that he first-timed to the Colonials net, skimming the crossbar but still going in for the 2-0 lead.

That was all the Lancer defense and junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) needed keeping the Colonials’ shots out of the net for the shut out victory. Youmans finished with five saves on the night, while Yahr tallied four.

“We put together a full game of soccer,” explained second-year head coach Jon Atkinson. “We believed in each other and had the desire to make good things happen. Today, was our day and it was a well-rounded and well deserved victory for our boys.”
