BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University tallied two second-half goals less than a minute apart for a 2-0 women’s soccer victory past visiting Campbell University Monday afternoon at the new Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the first-ever win past the Camels in four matches as the Lancers improved to 2-1-1 this season, while Campbell dropped to 0-3. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, September 6, at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania beginning at 1 p.m..

Against Campbell, the two teams battled to a scoreless first half and well into the second half before Longwood put two unassisted goals on the scoreboard within 34-seconds of each other with just over 10 minutes remaining. The first goal, and game-winning goal, came at 79:16 when freshman Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) got behind the defense on a breakaway and beat the keeper while delivering the ball to the back of the net at the right post. The Lancers made sure of the home triumph just seconds later when junior Katie Young/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) controlled a loose ball out top and passed it to freshman Colleen Thamm/Manassas (Battlefield) who promptly blasted the ball over the keeper’s head from 25-yards out.

Longwood took a 14-6 advantage in shots, and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00, 2 sv) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers to record her first shutout of the season. Senior Samar Azem (90:00, 2 ga, 6 sv) also went the distance in front of the net for Campbell which had won the three previous meetings in the sport between the two schools.
