BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The Longwood men’s soccer team finished its Florida weekend trip undefeated with Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 win over North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. The win puts the Lancers at 2-6-2 on the season while the Ospreys fall to 2-5-1. The Lancers will return to action Saturday, September 30 as they travel to Pennsylvania to take on ASC foe Philadelphia University for a 2:30 p.m. match-up.
After a scoreless first half the Lancers opened up the scoring as freshman Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) netted his first collegiate goal giving Longwood the 1-0 lead. Diallo took a pass from freshman Giovanni Peralta/Lorton (Robert E. Lee) just outside the box and dribbled in for a one-on-one with the Ospreys goalie, pulling the keeper off his line before placing a well hit ball into the back of the net. Sophomore Adam Kotchin/North Hanover, N.J. (The Hun School of Princeton) recorded his first goal of his career, settling a pass from senior Justin Williams/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) and firing a rocket from 25 yards out giving Longwood a two goal cushion with 24:13 to go in the game.
After a North Florida goal to cut the lead to one, the Lancers were able to tack on an insurance goal late in the game as junior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) one timed a pass from classmate Elvis Cosic/Richmond (J.R. Tucker) for the 3-1 final. Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) recorded the win in net for Longwood, making four saves in 90:00 of action.
“This was an overall team win,” stated head coach Jon Atkinson. “Our boys came out worked hard and played strong. Our defense really clamped down today and had a solid performance, not giving any of North Florida’s forwards any good chances. Marcus Dixon won the battle in the midfield for us, getting the first and second ball most of the match.”
