BOX SCORE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Longwood University took a 2-0 women’s soccer road victory at Big South Conference member UNC Asheville Saturday evening in North Carolina.  It was the second win in two seasons against the Bulldogs by the Lancers who improved to 4-3-2, while UNC Asheville dropped to 3-2-1.  Longwood will play another Big South opponent on Wednesday, September 27, at in-state foe Radford University beginning at 7 p.m..

In Asheville, Longwood went ahead early just 3:42 into the match on a goal from freshman standout Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) with an assist by senior Vanessa Congdon/Charlotte, N.C. (Charlotte Catholic).  It was Fening’s team-leading fourth goal of the year.  The Lancers secured the road triumph just before the intermission as junior Katie Young/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) blasted a shot into the net from a loose ball on a corner kick opportunity at 43:28.  It was Young’s first goal of the season.

“I’m happy for the team as they got what they deserved,” said 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer.  “Defensively, we did a good job of keeping them in front of us.  Overall, we battled hard and it is good to get our first road win.”

UNC Asheville did take a 13-7 advantage in shots, though Longwood had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.  Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with seven saves en route to her third shutout of the campaign.  Veronica Lazar (90:00) also played the duration for the Bulldogs with two saves.
